Observations made between 1974 and 1982 show that the P Cygni supergiant AG Car is variable in the infrared (JHKL). Between 1980 and 1982 AG Car brightened by over a magnitude at K and then faded again, these changes being parallelled by optical light variations. The brightening was accompanied by a reddening of the flux distribution and extreme variations in both the infrared and optical spectrum. It seems probable that these effects were due to the ejection of a shell.
