The stable carbon isotopes were analysed in wood of palmtrees in order to investigate the accumulation of fossil-fuel-derived CO 2 in the atmosphere. No significant trend was found, however, for the last 100 years. Despite the fact that palmwood samples cannot be dated easily, palm trees seem to give better isotopic records of atmospheric CO 2 than trees with rings, as indicated by the small "biological noise" found in palm stems.
