TeV gamma rays have been detected from three active galactic nuclei (AGN), the X-ray selected BL Lacertae (BL Lac) objects Markarian 421 (Mrk 421), Mrk 501, and 1ES 2344+514. Only one of these objects, Mrk 421, has been detected as a significant source of MeV gamma rays by the EGRET detector on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory even though BL Lac objects constitute a significant fraction of the AGN detected by EGRET. Searches of several other EGRET sources have not revealed any TeV emission. The most significant features of the emission from these TeV sources are large amplitude variability on time scales from minutes to years and energy spectra which extend to 10 TeV or more. Intensive multi-wavelength campaigns have also revealed short-term correlated variability between the TeV gamma rays and lower energy photons which lead to stringent tests of current blazar emission models. Recent results from the TeV sources will be presented and their implications for our understanding of AGN will be discussed.
