We propose to test the AGN paradigm by analyzing the stellar kinematics and nuclear structure in two nearby Seyfert galaxies. The AGN paradigm proposes that AGNs are powered by the accretion of matter onto supermassive black holes. Ground-based observations have discovered evidence of supermassive black holes in nearby quiescent galaxies by analyzing the stellar kinematics and nuclear structure. However, similar observations for galaxies hosting AGNs have not been possible because Earth's atmosphere prevents the detection of stellar light within 1" of a luminous AGN. With the improved imaging performance available to Cycle 4 HST observations, 80% of the light from an AGN is contained within a circle with radius=0.1 arcsec, thus providing for the detection of stellar light close to the nucleus. The advantage of detecting supermassive black holes in Seyfert galaxies instead of quiescent galaxies is that there is no need to rely on the statistics of AGNs and galaxies to place constraints on the AGN paradigm. The mass determined for the central engine by this technique for a Seyfert galaxy could be compared directly to the mass implied by the kinematics of the BLR gas, testing the hypothesis that it is in Keplerian motion. We propose to observe two Seyfert galaxies with HST, M81 and NGC 4151, since the black hole masses suggested from other studies can be detected.
