The photochemical theory was tested using solar occultation data obtained during the Atmospheric Trace Molecular Spectroscopy (ATMOS) experiment. It is shown that critical tests of the photochemical theory can be made by considering the so-called 'rate ratio' of a species, defined as the ratio of the rate of production to the rate of loss of the species under consideration. Using ATMOS data, rate ratios for NO2, ClONO2, HNO4, and N2O5 were evaluated and compared with the predictions of a diurnal photochemical model of the relevant rate ratio, demonstrating the usefulness of this parameter measured at occultation times.
