Pre-launch testing is essential to adequately verify hardware of Agency programmes with respect to functionality, performance, and space environment compatibility. Such verification requires the provision of test facilities, and the ESA Test Centre provides the largest and most powerful set of test facilities in Europe. The main facilities at ESTEC are unique and therefore indispensable for European Space programmes e.g. the Large Space Simulator (LSS) the Large European Acoustic Facility (LEAF), the large 6 axis hydraulic shaker HYDRA, And the new large EMC test facility MAXWELL. This paper discusses the main facilities at ESTEC, aspects of the Coordinated European Test Facilities (CETeF) and aspects of effective testing.
