Results are reported for sounding-rocket observations of Cyg X-1 carried out over the energy ranges from 1.5 to 5 keV, 5 to 10 keV, and 10 to 25 keV (the L, M, and H bands, respectively). It is found that both the X-ray intensity and spectral hardness fluctuate in a complex manner, with the spectral variation becoming more pronounced for integration times of the order of 0.1 sec. The H-band component is shown to fluctuate occasionally on characteristic time scales of the order of 0.1 to 1 sec in a different fashion from the L- and M-band components. An analysis of the variability coefficients indicates the presence of a characteristic time scale of 0.1 to 1 sec for all bands, an additional time scale of no more than about 10 msec for the H band, as well as sporadic flares and bursts on a time scale of 1 sec or less. The results are evaluated in terms of a shot-noise model.
