Results obtained with a Ly-alpha photometer aboard the Prognoz-5 spacecraft are used to measure the temperature of interplanetary-interstellar hydrogen. A temperature of 8800 plus or minus 1000 K is determined for the temperature of the nearby interstellar medium. This value is taken to suggest strongly that the solar system is moving through the 'intercloud medium' and to confirm the validity of the hypothesis of a hot intercloud medium heated by low-energy cosmic rays or soft X-rays.
