Planetary Atmospheres: Thermal Structure

Scientific paper

The author investigates the nonlinear operational dependence relating the height variation of the transmission function of a gaseous atmosphere at a specified frequency to the atmosphere's vertical temperature profile. This dependence, in the linear approximation, is reduced to an integral form in which the temperature dependence of the gas absorption coefficient is clearly seen. From this relation, a simple scheme is proposed to interpolate the temperature dependence at the working frequencies of the thermal sounding. An example is presented of the recovery of the temperature profile from the thermal sounding data using the proposed interpolation scheme.
