The natural thermoluminescence (TL) retained by soil samples collected from the shadows of certain Apollo 17 boulders has been compared with that of a nearby sunlit sample. By experimentally determining the various TL parameters of the relevant trapping levels, the temperature in the shade and the duration of the shadow cast on the samples are calculated. The values of the storage time in the shade confirm the relatively recent arrival of the boulder concerned (no. 4 of Station 6) at its present location, as was indicated by the freshness of its tracks on the slopes of the North Massif.
