Problems in the visual observation of binaries are pointed out, with special attention given to sources of atmospheric disturbance and the limitations of various instruments. The difficulty in observing the secondary of a close binary system where there is a difference of magnitude of 1-2 between the primary and secondary is pointed out. For the case of close binary systems containing bright primaries with rings, the secondary may lie on the ring, adding to the uncertainty in the position of the secondary.
