The design requirements and possible implementing technologies for a new generation of large optical telescopes are discussed. Among the problems to be solved by manufacturers are the alignment of multiple mirrors, the polishing of irregular glass segments constituting a large mirror, the active control of thin large-diameter monolithic mirrors under thermal and structural loads, and the use of relatively inexpensive mirror materials. The role of economic considerations is stressed, as well as the possibilities offered by computerized control of mounts and the extension of optical reception into the near-infrared portion of the spectrum.
