The design of a telescope for an atmospheric sounder is outlined. The requirements, determining all design options, are given. The preliminary decisions regarding the choice of imaging elements, the number of mirrors, the mirror arrangement, and the form of the mirrors are presented. The optimization of the optical design is explained. The advantages of the system with regard to flexibility, cost reduction, image errors, and blocking of perturbing radiation, are discussed.
