Attention is given to a scenario that is compatible with the interpretation of the Venus Ishtar Terra's gravity anomalies and morphological features in terms of (1) isostatic compensation of central Ishtar, and (2) mass surpluses at the continental border and southern forelands. In this scenario, relative motions of the lowland Sedna Planitia against continental Ishtar Terra have caused buckling and flat subduction of the lowland lithospheric material. The free air gravity high is modeled by surplus masses of the buckling and of the high density subducting plate. The local interpretation given need not imply the existence of global plate tectonics on Venus such as those of the earth, although at least limited horizontal movements of the Venusian lithosphere appear to be likely. Plate recycling must accordingly be considered for heat transfer through the lithosphere, in addition to conduction and hot spot volcanism.
