Implementation of the Virtual Observatory presents numerous technical challenges. These include advanced hardware for archiving data and catalogs in the multi-terabyte to petabyte range, distributed computational facilities for supporting large-scale statistical analyses and data mining applications, and high-speed wide-area networks enabling the rapid interchange of data of interest. Advanced software will be required for performing massive cross-correlations and being able to visualize and quantify the results, and software must be able to be deployed to the network of VO computational resources. Researchers will require access tools for both derived catalogs and the underlying data, enabling them to build new "instruments" for making measurements with the VO. Distributed information services, archives, catalogs, and computational resources will need to be knit into an integrated resource through standard data transport protocols and metadata standards. Fortunately, many elements of this technology base are now in development, and others will emerge through the VO and similar science-driven initiatives. Through partnering with the information technology and computer science communities, we believe we can make the science goals of the VO a reality.
