The Indian Space Launch Vehicle program is discussed together with the inherent challenges that are to be faced in the process of the implementation of the program. The ongoing launch vehicle projects, the ASLV and PSLV, and the GSLV, planned for a 1992 launch, together with their configuration, launch weight, and other characteristics, are described and compared with the world class launch vehicles, such as Conestoga-II, Delta, Titan IIIC, H-IA, H-II, and Ariane-V. The key technologies and the prospects for the future are examined in the areas of materials and structures, solid propulsion and liquid propulsion systems, control systems, stage auxiliary systems, avionics systems, and integration. In addition, the aspects of fluid mechanics, atmospheric flight mechanics, and astrodynamics are considered.
