The outer Solar System contains a great diversity of planets and satellites. Cassini (a Flagship class mission) is now completing exploration of the Saturn system; New Horizons (New Frontiers class) is enroute to the first encounter with the Pluto-Charon system in 2015, pressing onward into the Kuiper belt thereafter; and Juno (New Frontiers class) is being readied for a 2011 launch to Jupiter. An extended-extended mission (XXM) for Cassini is under consideration by NASA, along with, and in collaboration with ESA, an Outer Planets Flagship mission to the Jupiter system, the Europa Jupiter System Mission (EJSM). Many fundamental questions about the outer planets remain to be addressed, which impacts the understanding of both our Solar System and extra-solar systems as well. The Outer Planets Assessment Group (OPAG) will summarize the technologies required to enable the diverse scientific missions required to explore the outer Solar System, focusing on the most important mission targets for 2013-2022.
