VERITAS, the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System, is a major new ground-based observatory for studying nonthermal astrophysics in the gamma-ray band above 100 GeV. Stereo observations with the first two of four telescopes began in January, 2006. For this commissioning period, known TeV sources were observed. Here, we discuss the technical performance of VERITAS during these observations, including the telescope; the mirrors; the camera; the trigger system, including a true array-level trigger; and the FADC-based data acquisition system. An update will also be given on the construction of the four-telescope array on Mt. Hopkins in southern Arizona, which will be completed by December, 2006.
