During the 1998/1999 and 1999/2000 school years, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Department of Physics taught an advanced placement physics course to regional high school students. This educational experience took place via a mixed-mode (synchronous and asynchronous) distance-learning course. The course made use of video conferencing, application sharing and other state of the art instructional technologies. Additionally, Interactive Lecture Demonstrations, a physics education research-based intervention developed by Ronald Thornton and David Sokoloff, were employed in the course via video conferencing. Interactive Lecture Demonstrations have been used by a large number of educators in on-campus physics courses. They have been associated with significant improvements in conceptual learning for many varied student populations. The course discussed here represents the first attempt to use this exemplary approach in a distance-learning environment. In this talk, we will discuss the form of the course and Interactive Lecture Demonstrations in detail. Additionally, we will talk about the lessons we learned in the course of this experiment. Student learning outcomes and student reactions to the course were assessed and those results will be presented. The course was offered as part of an educational innovation grant from the AT&T and Sloan Foundations designed to provide advanced placement courses to under-resourced school districts.
