Small telescopes and telescope kits provide a high-quality set of inquiry-based explorations that are suitable for upper elementary and middle school-aged students in both formal and informal educational environments. We have developed a wide array of activities around small telescopes. In general, these activities encourage cooperative learning, testing of ideas and predictions, and hands-on work. These activities were designed with a broad understanding of student misconceptions and have been well-tested in a variety of settings. As such, we expect the teaching activities to be widely used in the International Year of Astronomy 2009.
