The advances in astrophysics over the past several decades have been breathtaking. Nowhere has this been more apparent than in the field of cosmology. Despite the huge steps forward in our understanding of the universe, the public at large remains in the dark to a large extent. This is likely true for two reasons. First, school curriculum has not been able to keep up with the rapid scientific advances. Second, the teachers who present that curriculum are not being trained to understand the recent observations or the technologies responsible for the changes in paradigm. We propose to change this by creating a new online astrophysics curriculum dealing with cosmology. As a first step toward developing this curriculum we are writing a Cosmology Subject Inventory (CSI). The CSI will be used to determine what areas of cosmology pose the biggest hurdles to the understanding of teachers and their students and to identify common misconceptions they hold. It will thus inform the creation of a cosmology curriculum that can best serve our goal of developing a scientifically literate and engaged teacher corps and citizenry.
