Algol Systems: Periods
Scientific paper
Reports observations of the eclipsing binary TAV J2106+194 = GSC 1657.1754. The authors have combined visual and photovisual magnitude estimates and used CCD photometry to refine the period which can be represented by the ephemeris JD Min I = 2450307.705(±0.005) + 10.3526±(0.0002)d×E. An O-C diagram for all the timings is shown. The primary minimum magnitude drops from 10.5m to probably 12.6m and a weak secondary minimum is suggested. The visual and photographic light curve and the CCD light curve are shown. The authors have used the LIGHT2 code of Hill to model the system. It seems most likely that the system contains a mid-B main sequence star and a G-type subgiant. The inclination is probably 87° which is on the cusp of totality. This new variable is a relatively rare example of a long-period Algol system with deep eclipses and should be a useful object for testing evolutionary models of these systems. (A finding chart with magnitude sequence and two CCD images showing the object near maximum and minimum light are reproduced on the inside back cover of the journal).
