A method for estimating the Ta-180m production cross section is proposed. The method is applied to the reaction Hf-178 (p,n) Ta-178h,l in order to study the Hf-180 (p,n) Ta-180m,g reaction. The cross sections are expressed in terms of compound-nucleus excitation energies. The experimental cross-section values are compared with the data of Norman et al. (1982), and good correlation is observed. It is concluded that experimental values for the excitation cross section of the high-spin Ta-178 isomer are applicable for estimating the cross-section production of the high-spin Ta-180 isomer.
