The effect of compressibility on the instability criterion for the characteristic behavior of a plasma and a magnetic field near the interface between them is investigated. Particular attention is given to the tangential-discontinuity instability, which is a suitable description for disturbances whose wavelength is large in comparison with the thickness of the magnetopause. Analysis of the relevant dispersion equation shows that the tangential-discontinuity instability may arise in the case of the magnetopause only if the wave vector and the vector corresponding to the velocity difference within and outside the magnetopause are not normal to the geomagnetic field. The effect of compressibility on unstable disturbances is found to be negligible if a certain velocity condition is satisfied, but it is concluded that compressibility must be taken into account in analyses of magnetopause instability.
