Whereas the art of mechanical and optical design of telescopes is in good shape with problems well understood, if not completely solved, the thermal design of telescopes and facilities is in a far less satisfactory state. Substantial experimental effort is needed in the next few years if we are to properly reap the benefit of the new telescopes.
