The 9RE apogee polar spacecraft passed through the near-tail region when its apogee lay near the magnetospheric equator during the falls of 2001, 2002 and 2003. In the present study we examine dipolarizations observed by both the Polar spacecraft and the GOES spacecraft. Conjugate observations allow us to understand the propagation direction of the dipolarization front. The Polar spacecraft recorded more events in which the onset occurred earlier on Polar than GOES, suggesting the earthward propagation. However, there are some events in which onsets encounter GOES spacecraft before Polar. One possible explanation for these events is that the Polar spacecraft was located in the field line with lower magnetic latitude than that of GOES and the perturbations from tail reconnection propagate faster in high latitude lobe field lines. Another is that the disturbance is moving away from the Earth in the equatorial plane as field piles up after earthward convection. Field-aligned currents are often seen before the geosynchronous orbit dipolarizations.
