The main aspects of current knowledge of T Tauri stars are reviewed. The optical properties of these stars and their short and long wavelength properties are surveyed in detail, and their large-scale environment is briefly addressed. The protostellar evolution of solar-type stars is discussed, including the problem of initial conditions, the evolution of a one solar mass protostar in spherical symmetry, stellar core properties at the end of the accretion phase, and the development of the T Tauri phase. Quantitative models of T Tauri stars are considered, including semiempirical models, accretion models, and models based on magnetism. The star's interaction with its environment is discussed.
