The results of studies of T Tauri stars are reviewed and discussed. The photometric and spectroscopic characteristics of these stars are summarized, and their position in the HR diagram is described. The latest observations of T Tauri stars and new empirical models are addressed. Finally, the applicability of T Tauri stars as prototypes of the evolution of the early sun is considered.
