Spatially unresolved infrared and millimeter continuum measurements suggest that as many as 50% of T Tauri stars possess circumstellar disks similar to the solar nebula from which our planetary system formed. However, high resolution, high dynamic range optical images exist for only a handful of the hundreds of nearby T Tauri stars that may harbor observable disks. Initial HST imaging with WFPC2 has shown that circumstellar disks are readily detected as reflection nebulosities adjacent to the bright PSF of the central star. We propose an R-band SNAPshot survey of a large number of T Tauri stars in the four nearest star-forming clouds. Our targets all have millimeter continuum excess emission and/or optical polarization above local interstellar values. Our goals are to validate the disk frequency suggested by the groundbased surveys, to measure the disk sizes and constrain their masses, to identify the nearly edge- on systems which are particularly favorable for studies of disk geometry, and to discover new disks undetectable using other techniques. The results will be of fundamental importance to understanding the nature of planet-forming environments and their frequency in the galaxy.
