The irregular variable star T Tauri is characterized in a review of observational investigations since its discovery in 1852. Photographs, maps, and spectra are provided, and the presence of CO, H2O, and H2 molecules around T Tauri and the IR companion recently discovered to the south of the main object are discussed in detail. The IR radiation is attributed to the collapse of a protostellar envelope of about 2-3 solar mass.
