We study the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect during the formation of elliptical galaxies, and estimate the epoch where the observation of giant elliptical galaxies through the SZ effect would be more efficient. The elliptical galaxy formation models of Friaça & Terlevich1 are used. We show that during the early epochs of galaxy formation (~ 3 × 108 years) the gas in the center of giant elliptical galaxies (~1012M&sun;) reaches a temperature and density high enough to detect the SZ signature in reasonably short exposure times using a big collecting area telescope equipped with a sensitive bolometer millimeter array (e.g. BOLOCAM in the future LMT/GTM).
