We investigate how the observed features of dwarf nova outbursts in different systems can be described by the disk instability model using the same α parametrization for all systems. We take the two-alpha description, introducing α_cold_ and α_hot_ for the accretion disk viscosity in the cold and the hot state. The present numerical investigation includes three parts: (1) vertical structure computations for different values of α, mass of central star, mixing length parameter, (2) determination of the transition front velocities for the parameters chosen, (3) computation of the disk evolution during outburst cycles for comparison with observations of VW Hydri, U Geminorum and SS Cygni (with a detailed investigation of the difficulties to model the observations). In addition an analytical description of the outburst behaviour is given. Results for duration of quiescence and of outburst stages are compared with data of some well observed dwarf nova systems.
