The relative trigonometric parallaxes from the General Catalogue of Trigonometric Stellar Parallaxes are compared with spectroscopic and cluster parallaxes, in order to study the absolute zero points, systematic effects, and external errors of the trigonometric parallaxes. The large number of stars required to determine an observatory's zero point is emphasized by an analysis of statistical theory, and an investigation of the relationship between external errors and observatory weights indicates that while for some observatories a single external error does characterize the data well, for several others there is a real range of external errors. Certain precepts for the new Yale Parallax Catalogue are recommended, including the use of observatory corrections, correction of individual relative parallaxes to absolute, and adoption of a carefully defined system of observatory weights for combining multiple observations.
