A study is being performed on an interferometer temperature sounder in which the temperature retrieval method uses radiances in the interferogram directly rather than the radiances in the spectra. The instrument is to be employed on board a geostationary 3-axis stabilized spacecraft to provide a three-dimensional image of global and small-scale weather patterns. The instrument utilizes a 40 cm aperture Dall-Kirkham telescope with an object space scan mirror for pointing control. The detector optics includes a double aplanat immersed detector system cooled to 90 K by a radiation cooler. Attention is also given to the interferometer mirror scan drive system and the advantages of the employed dynamic alignment.
