Merely being able to synthesise a population of objects does not automatically mean that we understand their formation. Many of the evolutionary processes involved in compact binary evolution are poorly constrained, and the parameters we use to quantify our ignorance can conspire with the complexity of binary population synthesis (BPS) codes to confuse even the experts. We discuss two examples of the apparent usefulness of BPS: the nature of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) and the formation of short-period black-hole low-mass X-ray binaries (BHLMXBs). In the first case, BPS studies seem to agree that most ULXs do not contain intermediate-mass black-holes, whilst BPS codes do not seem to agree about whether short-period BHLMXBs can be formed through standard evolutionary channels. Recently proposed alternative formation channels for these systems seem to naturally explain the observed surface abundances of short-period BHLMXBs. We discuss the usefulness of BPS and some promising directions for future development.
