The paper responds to the objection often brought against hierarchical cosmology, namely that the Universe in fact looks symmetric as regards number counts of objects on a sufficiently large scale, which is difficult to reconcile with an indefinitely clumped system of stars, galaxies, groups of galaxies, clusters of galaxies, superclusters, and so on. It is asserted that a necessary condition for symmetry is that observers should always be in one of the densest units of a level, which is satisfied for beings like humans who live on planets near stars. A sufficient condition is shown to be that the ratio of cluster diameter to distance between cluster centers be greater than about 0.1.
