We integrate the axisymmetric α^2^ ω equations in a thick torus with vacuum boundary conditions. A variety of stable solutions exist and we study and interpret the transitions between them. We explain these transitions in terms of dynamical systems theory and introduce a simple mapping which exhibits many features of the full system. We attempt to link the dynamical transitions with changes in the configurations of the poloidal and toroidal fields. Their length scale remains of the order of the minor radius of the torus even when the time behaviour is highly irregular. This feature is in contrast to the behaviour of the disc models of Torkelsson & Brandenburg (1994a,b,c), but in agreement with the spherical shell dynamo of Tavakol et al. (1995).
