The influence of spatial symmetry on the formation of singularities is considered in the context of vacuum cosmological solutions to the Einstein equations. A practical means of screening arbitrary spacetimes for the possibility of trapped surfaces is described. Evidence is presented which supports the hypothesis that ``local'' trapped surfaces do not occur in T3×R spacetimes with a single Killing vector. This suggests that the analytic proof of the result for two-Killing-vector spacetimes of this variety can be generalized.
