Switch-on and early operation of the Exosat payload has demonstrated that, with the exception of one detector, technical performance is as expected from ground test and calibration. The non-X-ray background in the detectors is, however, much lower than predicted before launch, so that Exosat will have a higher sensitivity to cosmic X-ray sources than anticipated.
