The standard model of polars is considered, with emphasis on the phenomenon of Magnetic Close Binary Stars (MCBS). Previous data show asynchronous MCBSs to be in the 'propeller' stage, and to be rapidly evolving mass-ejecting systems during the stage of synchronization of their orbital and rotational motion, a stage which occurs at characteristic times of less than 1000 yr. When the angle between the magnetic axis and the line of centers is near zero, the accretion rate is largest, and when it is about 90 deg, the magnetic field prevents the plasma flow and the magnetic valve is closed. Observational properties of the swinging dipole model which are observed in AM Herculis and other polars include change of the system's luminosity with characteristic times of several years, and change of the phase curves of the light, polarization, and radial velocities with a cycle of a few years.
