Use of small satellites in astronomy observation can get most valuable science data with low cost. Therefor, Tsinghua University is developing a small satellite for astronomy observation called Space multi-band Variable Object Monitor (SVOM) cooperated with National Astronomy Observatory of China and other institutions. This paper introduced the background of SVOM project briefly, and described the science goals, payloads, orbit and the platform in detail. SVOM is a 100kg class small satellite with the payloads of high precession UV/Optical telescope, X-ray field monitor and optical field monitor. The science goals of SVOM are: (1) the observation of stellar oscillation and solar-like stellar flare,(2)thezero-delayX-ray/Opticalsynchronousobservationofquick variable objects such as gamma-ray burst, X-ray burst and so on, (3) and the search of outer planets. According to the request of the mission, a unique orbit, i.e. sun-synchronous dawn-dusk orbit with the incline of 98.6°, was selected to be the benchmark orbit of SVOM. Adopting this orbit can not only ensure that the UV/Optical telescope observes stars continuously (continuously observing duration>55 days) but also reduce the influence of orbit radiant background high-dense electron area on X-ray observation.. The design of SVOM platform follows the idea of modularizing and succeeds to the ripe technology of Tsinghua-1 microsatellite, what makes the development period of SVOM very short. In terms of the strict request of UV/Optical telescope on attitude stability, a Inertia Measurement Unit (IMU) is combined with other attitude sense instruments to form attitude determination methods for different attitude control modes. Under Normal Observation Mode, the combination of IMU and star tracker is able to achieve the attitude measurement precision of 0.01, and the attitude stability is better than 0.005 /s. As Chinese first astronomy observation small satellite, SVOM is to be the milestone of Chinese space based astronomy research for its abundant achievements and the developing idea of faster, better and cheaper.
