The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) is a next-generation radio telescope currently under construction in Western Australia. ASKAP will consist of an array of 36 12-meter antennas, each equipped with a phased-array feed. Its large instantaneous field-of-view will allow ASKAP to survey the whole sky much faster than is possible with existing radio telescopes, and its unique combination of survey speed and sensitivity will open up novel ways of exploring the radio sky. In the first five years of observations (starting in 2013), at least 75% of the time will be devoted to large surveys. After an open international competition, ten major surveys have been selected to proceed to a design-study phase.
Here we present the EMU survey which will survey the sky as far North as +30° to an rms of 10µJy. It can be characterised as a “Southern NVSS”, but with 40 times the sensitivity, and six times the resolution, of the NVSS.
The key science goals for EMU are:
• To trace the evolution of star-forming galaxies from z=2 to the present day, using a wavelength unbiased by dust or molecular emission.
• To trace the evolution of massive black holes throughout the history of the Universe, and understand their relationship to star-formation.
• To use the distribution of radio sources to explore the large-scale structure and cosmological parameters of the Universe.
• To explore an uncharted region of observational parameter space, almost certainly finding new classes of object.
• To determine how radio sources populate dark matter halos, providing crucial insights into the underlying astrophysics of clusters and halos.
• To create the most sensitive wide-field atlas of Galactic continuum emission yet made in the Southern Hemisphere.
The results of the survey will be public domain, and will include cross-identifications with surveys at other wavelengths.
