An analysis by surface photometry of the galaxy system NGC 4656/4657 yields the following results. First, NGC 4656 and NGC 4657 appear to be parts of the same galaxy. Second, the system bears a strong resemblance to both the SMC and NGC 55. Third, although the outermost isophotes in B and G light show coincidences with radio continuum, the authors found no conclusive optical indications of an interaction with the galaxy NGC 4631.
