Computerized techniques for reducing surface photometry of galaxies are described and used to investigate radial variations of the M/L ratio in NGC 157, an isolated galaxy of luminosity class I and morphological type SAB(rs)bc. U, B, V, and R isophote maps of NGC 157 are presented, the integrated luminosity distribution of the galaxy is examined, and mass models are considered. The results indicate that NGC 157 has an additional exponential outer component in its reduced luminosity distribution, that this component is likely to be systematically red in comparison with the inner exponential component, and that the outer exponential component might have a systematically higher M/L ratio than the inner component. Similar results are obtained for the luminosity class I-II galaxies NGC 1084 and NGC 7331. The gross structure and detailed color and M/L variations of the galaxies are explained in terms of the density-wave theory of spiral structure.
