Radar data of the Venusian surface from the Pioneer Venus 1 are informally discussed. From the altimetry standpoint, the data are good to within 200 meters; the images have approximately a 30 km resolution with the altitude points being spaced 75 km in longitude and 100 km in latitude. Geological interpretations are offered based on the Pioneer data in conjunction with ground based radar and altimetry data. A 'plains' area is identified representing 65% of the planet which lies within 2 km of the nominal mean elevation. Three highland areas are identified and discussed. Venus has only 30% lowland as compared to the Earth's 75%. The high mountains are as high as the highest mountains on Earth, and the high plateaus are higher than the greatest plateaus on Earth. Signs of regional tectonic motion are also discussed.
