Due to the sustained presence of liquid water and relatively high subsurface temperatures of aquifers, the potential locations of former aquifer ecosystems on Mars are considered as future sites for lander missions to Mars for the search of paleontological evidence of former life forms. It is suggested that the origins of outflow channels on Mars and the sites of suspected karst terrain may indicate the locations where aquifers once existed.
