Surface and tribological properties of molybdenum disulfide-based lubricants that were exposed to real low earth orbit space environment were analyzed. Organic binder-type MoS2 sample was exposed to space environment for one year and two years, and retrieved for analysis. Corresponding ground-based simulation tests were also carried out. XPS and EDS measurements suggested that electron beam and ultraviolet exposure did not affect chemical structure of MoS2 surfaces. However, atomic oxygen-exposed and flight samples showed surface oxidation. In addition, samples exposed to LEO environment were covered by silicon contamination. Friction coefficient of the flight sample was similar to that of the control sample.
