Scientific paper

Detection of supermassive black holes {BHs} in normal galaxies is one of the grand challenges that HST was designed to meet. The targets for this supplement to the STIS dynamics IKP were selected to complement the targets already in the IKP target list. The proposal aims to go beyond the detection of supermassive black holes and to search for stellar kinematic evidence that would distinguish between various black hole formation mechanisms. These observations will complement ground based 2-dimensional integral field spectroscopic observations of these targest which were obtained in March 1998 at the CFHT.
