X-Ray Transients: White Dwarfs

Scientific paper

A model is presented to describe the X-ray turn-on phase of supersoft sources, the contraction of the blown-up white dwarf envelope following an outburst (a nuclear flash). The temperature of the envelope increases from ≡(1-2)×105K to ⪆4×105K and the flux distribution is shifted into the ROSAT PSPC band. The time scale of the contraction phase depends on the envelope mass, which is related to the white dwarf mass. The observed turn-on time scales of ≡6-16, and ≡3-5 d observed in the transient supersoft sources RX J0513.9-6951 and RX J0045.4-4154 give white dwarf masses of ≡1.33-1.36 and ≡1.37-1.38 Msun. This gives evidence for heavy mass white dwarfs for both objects.
