In the late 1990s, a list of candidate supersoft X-ray sources (SSS) marginally detected with ROSAT in M31 was published. We explored the field of one source and examined optical data in order to find an optical counterpart. We performed differential photometry to find the corrected magnitudes of the three possible counterparts and five reference stars. We find that one candidate is variable on a few hours time scales, and is most likely an eclipsing binary. We suggest that this candidate is the SSS optical counterpart. Although further monitoring is needed, this is the first time that an optical identification of a non-nova
SSS in M31 has been accomplished. This work was supported by the REU and ASSURE programs through NSF award AST-0453442.
